POSITION: Sound Engineer and Technician
REPORTS TO: Lighting, Sound, and Video Supervisor
LOCATION: Bethesda, MD
DEPARTMENT: Production
FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt
POSITION STATUS: Part time – Guaranteed 1,040 hours and prorated benefits per fiscal year in exchange for scheduling priority, distributed approximately evenly. Hours variable, includes weekends, evenings and holidays. Must be present during all load ins, tech weeks, and strike as required by the LSV Supervisor.
JOB SUMMARY
With a primary focus on sound, the Production Sound Engineer and Lighting Technician assists in the implementation of all lighting, sound & projections designs in the professional, student, and theater for change productions, and maintaining the lighting and sound systems in two theater spaces.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
SOUND DUTIES (80%)
- Serve as the Head Sound Engineer for all Imagination Stage productions. Including but not limited to, loading in, testing and striking equipment, programming the sound board, completing notes during tech and previews, and training sound board operators and sound technicians as necessary.
- Assist the LSV Supervisor with sourcing the necessary sound equipment to execute approved designs
- Serve as Sound Board Operator/Mixer on assigned productions and rental events.
- Serve as the primary substitute Sound Board Operator/Mixer when the Sound Board Operator/Mixer assigned to the show is unavailable.
- Assists with all sound notes received from the production team
- Troubleshoot problems involving sound and equipment
- Coordinate and implement sound and audio needs for rehearsals
LIGHTING DUTIES (10%)
- As available and able, assist the LSV Supervisor with all lighting and video needs to support Imagination Stage productions including during load ins, technical rehearsals, and load outs.
- As available and able, assist the LSV Supervisor in troubleshooting problems involving lighting and video equipment.
GENERAL AND ORGANIZATIONAL SUPPORT DUTIES (10%)
- Be on call on occasional nights and weekends as directed by the LSV Supervisor to support Lighting, Sound, and Video needs for Imagination Stage productions, rentals, and programming.
- Provide LSV support for Imagination Stage Events and Rentals as directed.
- Work with the LSV Supervisor to ensure that all lighting, sound and video equipment and work and storage spaces are well maintained, inventoried, stored and organized.
- Train Production Apprentices in the basics of lighting and sound .
- Support the contributions and work objectives of work colleagues, including pitch-hitting when possible.
- Contribute to Imagination Stage's anti-racist/anti-oppression organizational goals through strategic partnership, active participation in IDEA initiatives, and rigorous self-reflection and self-accountability.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience in theatrical sound systems, equipment, and procedures.
- Experience live mixing singers, prerecorded tracks, and live instruments.
- Experience running and programming Qlab and digital sound boards, Yamaha CL3 preferred
- Experience programming and troubleshooting Dante Software.
- Ability to read and execute lighting and sound paperwork including but not limited to light plots, channel hook-ups, instrument schedules, magic sheets, input and output schedules, etc.
- Basic knowledge of software including Lightwright 6, Vectorworks 2022, ETC EOS Consoles and programming is desired, but not required.
- Ability to wire and solder preferred
- Demonstrated attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines
- Understanding of the theatrical design process
- Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication and organizational skills
- Ability to work independently and with initiative
- Ability to work productively as member of an effective team
- Ability to be on call on weekends and work some weekends and evenings
- Must have Drivers License and be comfortable driving cargo van

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to:
- Push, lift, and maneuver up to 50-70 lbs repeatedly both alone or with others
- Assemble and climb scaffolding and ladders, drive scissor lift, and work at heights
- Navigate narrow spaces such as storage closets, trap room, and hallways
- Sit at a desk and spend a portion of the day using a computer
- Stand or walk for long portions of the day
- Frequent use of fine motor control with wiring and other similar tasks
