Resident Carpenter

REPORTS TO: Technical Director

LOCATION: Beltsville, MD with frequent work in Bethesda, MD

DEPARTMENT: Production


POSITION STATUS: Full time. Must be present during all load ins, tech weeks, and strike as required by the Technical Director. 


The Resident Carpenter is responsible for the execution of all scenic elements for Imagination Stage programming under the supervision of the Technical Director. They will also directly supervise overhire and apprentices working in the Scene Shop. The Resident Carpenter will also assist the Technical Director with administrative duties such as purchasing, inventory management, and organization.


  • Construct, load in/out, transport, and maintain scenery for all Imagination Stage programming in accordance with plans provided by the Technical Director, through carpentry, welding, rigging, work with plastics, fabrics, and other set related materials as directed by the Technical Director. 
  • Assist with inventory and purchasing of all scenery materials and shop supplies, as well as repair and maintenance of tools and equipment. 
  • Supervise over-hire and apprentices as deemed necessary by the Technical Director.
  • Assist with props construction, as needed.
  • Work with the Technical Director and Lead Carpenter to ensure safe, organized, and efficient working areas in all Imagination Stage scene shops, theatres, and production storage areas.  
  • Maintain tools and equipment in said locations, and assist in making physical improvements as necessary.
  • Maintain and organize scenery stock in shop storage and offsite storage areas
  • Will work with the Technical Director to coordinate and facilitate truck rental needs and logistics; typically serves as primary truck driver.
  • Serve as one of the emergency technicians outside of regular hours in order to assist with the prompt resolution of show-related incidents, and ensure the production can safely proceed.
  • Support the contributions and work objectives of work colleagues, including pitch-hitting when possible.
  • Contribute to Imagination Stage's anti-racist/anti-oppression organizational goals through strategic partnership, active participation in IDEA initiatives, and rigorous self-reflection and self-accountability.


  • Two to three years of professional experience as a carpenter.
  • Expertise in and ability to complete theatrical set construction through carpentry, rigging, and welding.
  • Working knowledge of technical theatre including lights, sound, and props.
  • Ability to read and understand drawings generated by CAD programs.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines
  • Understanding of the theatrical design process
  • Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and with initiative
  • Ability to work productively as member of an effective team
  • Ability to be on call on weekends and work some weekends and evenings
  • Must have valid driver’s license and be comfortable driving cargo van and box trucks up to 26’.

  • $50,000 to $52,000 per year.

This position will be subject to a two month furlough between June and August. During the furlough period, if the employee has chosen to be on Imagination Stage’s health benefits plan, Imagination Stage will cover and pay for any health insurance premiums.
